Letters to Gabriel Ferrier, 1888-1906.

The collection comprises 22 letters and one postcard sent by Jules Claretie to the painter Gabriel Ferrier between 1888 and 1906. Their correspondence started soon after the artist had painted Claretie's portrait in 1888, which is a recurrent subject in his letters for years afterward (1890, 1892, 1896). Claretie is grateful for its "vibrant" quality, which justifies its success at the Salon and at exhibitions abroad. He thanks Ferrier for a poster made for the theater (1895); congratulates him for the commission of a large canvas for the Paris Hôtel de Ville (1900-1901); and is eager to see Ferrier's new portrait of Pope Pius X (1904). Claretie apologizes in many letters for not finding the time to meet his friend, and describes his stressful responsibilities as administrator general of the Comédie Française. He asks Ferrier to visit him at the theater, and provides him and his family with tickets often hard to obtain. In March 1904 Claretie confesses that he had consented to sit for a portrait by an "interesting and charming" young artist. In 1906 he is delighted to address Ferrier not only as his portraitist and friend, but now also as "confrère" [after his admission at the Institute of France, where Claretie had been a member since 1888].
